About José Aponte

José Aponte, MA in Library Science '76, epitomizes leadership and impact in library and information science. Through four decades of service, he has elevated the profession while championing education, service and cultural awareness.

As San Diego County library director, Aponte led one of America’s largest library systems to national prominence, earning Library Journal’s Library of the Year award in 2012 for innovative programs serving vulnerable populations. His visionary leadership resulted in 10 new libraries, expanded services and groundbreaking community partnerships.

Aponte’s commitment to inclusive library science earned him REFORMA’s Trejo Librarian of the Year Award and recognition as a Library Journal Mover & Shaker. He was appointed to the advisory council for the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries and serves on the steering committee of the University of Arizona’s Knowledge River Scholars Program. Aponte has fundraised for scholarships through marathon running and cycling, and he is also an accomplished photographer.
